In order to achieve this, significant advances in cost, performance and reliability are needed, based on a 2011 report from a coalition of researchers from universities, industry, and government, supported by the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. This is a list of wind farms with a nameplate capacity of more than 400 MW currently under construction. The vast majority is onshore (1,541 farms); offshore is small but growing (13 farms).

As of September 2026, there are 640 wind farms in development in the US, according to Cleanview’s project tracker. Each month, we track projects in development and update our list of the largest wind farms expected to come online in the US. On this page, you can explore our database of planned wind farms in the US. As of 2022, Hornsea 2 in the United Kingdom is the largest offshore wind farm in the world at 1,386 MW. For onshore wind farms, see List of onshore wind farms.

  • The site stretches across hills and open lands designed to capture strong desert winds flowing through the pass.
  • Despite that, it was completed on budget and within the planned timeframe.
  • The leases authorize data gathering activities, allowing for the construction of meteorological towers on the Outer Continental Shelf from six to 18 miles (29 km) offshore.
  • This article lists the largest offshore wind farms that are currently operational rated by nameplate capacity.
  • Because the bases of offshore turbines function as artificial reefs, studies have shown that after the initial disturbance of construction, local fish and shellfish are positively affected.
  • The second concrete wind turbine tower to be built in the U.S., and also the country’s tallest (377 feet) at the time built, is in Adams county.

It was the subject of one of the first court cases dealing with noise and visual complaints against wind farms. The farm became fully operational in 2006 and has played a major role in Texas’ energy mix ever since. Strong west Texas winds offer a stable power source throughout the year. With a capacity of 735 megawatts, it ranks among the largest onshore wind farms in the United States. Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center is another major wind project in Texas.

The northern part of SunZia located in San Miguel and Lincoln counties has 242 turbines, while the southern part in Lincoln and Torrance counties has 674 turbines. Pattern Energy started construction of the SunZia Wind Project in 2023, after almost two decades of permitting and planning. The wind farm, located in New Mexico, has a total net summer generating capacity of 3,650 megawatts (MW) and is composed of 916 wind turbines. This wind farm is located in the Irish Sea approximately 19 kilometers (11 miles) west of the northwest coast of England.

There is competition for wind farms among farmers in places like Iowa or ranchers in Colorado. The development of wind power in the United States has been supported primarily through a production tax credit (PTC), which pays producers on the amount of electric power produced. These figures do not include subsidies and supports from other levels of government. A short term, one-year policy was enacted at the beginning of 2013 which provides a tax credit to projects under construction by the end of 2013 and completed before the end of 2014.

Wind power has become one of the leading sources of clean energy around the world. Wind prices for power contracts signed in the last few years have ranged from 1.4–5.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, with an average of 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. Twenty-three states had more than 1 gigawatt (GW) or 1,000 MW of wind capacity at the end of 2023, with seven above 5 GW. There are also small projects installed off the coasts of Rhode Island and Virginia, and dozens of larger projects in the works. The U.S. wind industry currently employs more than 125,000 full-time workers. The average capacity of utility-scale wind turbines installed in 2023 was 3.4 megawatts (MW), up 5% from the previous year.

A just energy transition for communities: Large-scale wind and solar projects in Sub-Saharan Africa

  • Wind energy only marginally increases total power system variability, as most changes in wind energy output are cancelled out by opposite changes in electricity demand or other sources of supply.
  • The project prevailed in court, helping establish legal stability for future wind projects in the region.
  • There are also small projects installed off the coasts of Rhode Island and Virginia, and dozens of larger projects in the works.
  • EIA reports wind, biomass and geothermal as one 526,246 GWh category; the split here carries a one-unit adjustment on wind so the three reconcile to that published total.
  • Wind power has become one of the leading sources of clean energy around the world.
  • Wind energy has rapidly grown to become a cornerstone of the U.S. clean energy transition, especially in regions like Texas, California, and the Midwest.

Generation from the SunZia Wind Project is reported by the http://web-promotion-services.net/OnlineMarketing/internet-campaign California Independent System Operator (CAISO) in EIA’s Hourly Electric Grid Monitor. With this addition, wind accounts for 45% of the capacity mix in the state, followed by 19% from solar and 19% from natural gas capacity. The new capacity from SunZia will bring total wind capacity in New Mexico up to 7,647 MW.

Its success helped show that large-scale clean energy could attract commercial interest in the United States. Construction finished in 2012 and marked a major step in U.S. wind investment during that period. The location benefits from strong sea winds and stable marine conditions throughout the year. Hornsea One is the largest offshore wind farm in the world. Jaisalmer benefits from state-level support, land availability, and favorable weather patterns.
